Psychology and mathematics education

Bounded rationality and its direct descendent, ecological rationality, have inspired mathematics educators along different lines. Ecologically rational representations and visualizations foster intuitions and trigger solutions of mathematical problems, particularly in the field of probability.
The inception of the Frontiers Research Topic “Psychology and mathematics education” was motivated by ideas formulated by Herbert Simon on problem solving and on representations. The research topic was very succesful, with 40 papers by mathematics educators of different countries in the world.
